Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) says that it has been qualified for the second stage of obtaining the Iran's third mobile license - as part of a consortium comprising local and international partners.
A press release issued by Omantel said that the company’s decision to enter into competition for the third mobile network operator in Iran comes within the framework of the efforts exerted by the company’s management to boost its local and foreign investments through joining a global consortium. The fact that Omantel has been qualified for the second stage confirms the great role played by the company among international telecom companies, the press release said.
A statement by the company indicated that Iran constitute one of the biggest regional telecom markets, with a population of 73 million, and mobile communications penetration less than 60% (the number of subscribers to the population). Furthermore, the number of under-25 years of age persons accounts for 50% of the total population. This shows that there are huge opportunities for growth in this sector in the future. Omantel noted that the third operator would enjoy exclusive rights to offer full range of third and second generations mobile communications services.
