Russia's Megafon awarded GSM licence in Iran

Russian mobile operator MegaFon has been awarded a licence to build a GSM network in Iran, according to a report form the Tabnak website. Following negotiations with Iranian officials, the operator was given a licence to open a branch in Tehran. In 2008, Megafon said it was ready to invest USD 4.66 billion in the construction of a network in Iran if it was awarded a licence. At present, Iran has two mobile service providers, namely the state-controlled Iran Telecommunication Company and MTN Irancell.
