Megafon denies Iran reports

Russian mobile operator Megafon has denied media reports that it has been offered a licence to operate as Iran’s third national mobile operator.

Peter Lidov, the firm’s PR director, said: ‘Megafon does not plan to enter the market of Iran. We monitor opportunities to enter promising markets outside Russia but Iran is not among them.’ Both Megafon and fellow Russian cellco Vimpelcom were linked to the licence during the original bidding process.

UAE-based Etisalat was awarded the concession in December 2008; however, the government cancelled the award in May and transferred the licence to Zain before withdrawing it once again in July.
